Odd Sox

During my web wandering today I came across a pilot made in 1999 for an Aussie TV show for kids called Odd Sox. I adore kids programming, not surprising considering Cat and Dog Find the Easter Bunny, and making TV for kids is really satisfying in a let your ’let your imagination be free while teaching something’ sort of way. Although this pilots editing and story telling is a little passe I can happily say the puppetry and sets are truly excellent. Although that shouldn't be surprising considering the show features some of Oz's best puppeteers. Here's the opening credits.

ODD SOX is a Registered Trademark

There's also a news story, not posted here, about washing a dog which ends in a bizarre scene with a group of children scrubbing each other with large brushes. Odd. But the oddest thing about this is that I have a number of scripts with the same title. No implications, they're completely different types of shows. My show was about a number of misfit odd socks battling the evil forces within a bachelor pad in the vain attempt to discover what had happened to their other halves. It was replete with stocking on football sock sex scenes and psychodelic regression therapy. Not exactly kids programming.

Although it IS a shame that the show above never progressed past pilot (Australian funding streams *rolls eyes*) it does leave me wondering whether I could get a hold of the puppets and re-tool the show. I'm sure big kids would love it.

Take: 28

Watching that opening sequence again this show has far too many characters for the concept. 8 or 9 badly drawn similar characters.

It's definately not the Muppets or the Fraggles.

Oddly reminiscence of Pee Wee Herman.

The freakier and more psychadelic the better! At least that's what I thought when I was 8.

So you can put that much effort into something, hey, and there's no funding... wow.

I was always surprised with the number of adult fans that Paul Reubens had and still has that his career tanked so completely.
Isn't someone doing 'The Story of J. Edgar Hoover' staring Paul Reubens?

I need a new box today, mine has become fetted...

I think Paul Reubens got shafted unfairly.
I loved the guys pee wee character.
It was so over the top.
My kids liked it at the pee wee level, I liked it at the Paul Reubens level.

Tich, My 8 year old self couldn't agree more. There was some really funky animations on Seaseme Street when I was a kid, usually counting numbers and the like. Totally trippy, totally great. I still wach them today.

I'd say this show had pretty good funding to produce the pilot but yeah, there's a distinct lack of money in childrens progamming down here and it's hardly surprising it didn't get picked up for production. There's a number of things that should have been different about this pilot to ensure its success. Not that I'm dissing the show, it's awesome, but stuff this quality gets passed on all the time.

As for Reubens, he's a very talented idiot. I mean, imaging being an Icon in childrens film and TV production but having a large stash of 'questionable' material depicting naked adolescents. That's totally NOT cool even if his claims of 'It's art' are true. He brought it on himself. Mind you, his character in Mystery Men is brilliant!

Yo SafeT,

Shhhhh, no-one here talks ill of the Wiggles. They've been the biggest money earning entertainers in Australia for ages now. Shhhhh.

I actually believe their format is amazing. Designed to make huge sums of money, but amazing.

There's no doubting the guys talent l>t. I just doubt his judgement. Pee Wee in his small suit and huge character always was naive but had heart in the right place. Casting Reubens in the same light may be a little naive in the smae way. The dude's an adult, his choices were stupid and potentially criminal not naive.

I seem to remember a well thought-out show that was marketed to an audience too young to understand its society-wide implications.

Yes l>t, and Michael Jackson just had 'sleep overs'.

Anyone that's puts kids in such a comprimised and damaging position, whether by buying elicit material or performing an act, should be held accountable. It's even worse if it's someone who's in a position of supposed trust.

Why hello there Miss Mizfit!

So lovely of you to drop bye. That scene was more comedic relief than anything else. It's kinda hard for socks to be sexy.

Should I shoot an episode of the show I once entitled Odd Sox? Maybe one day. I'd need to come up with a new title though.

Ahhhh, the Sinclairs

I'm not sure it was marketed to the wrong audience in Oz Gyrobo. It was certainly a mid to late teens show. Although I seem to remember an episode that parodied Driving Miss Daisy, I don't think the teens would have quite caught onto that.

Ooooooooooh, that was in 1991. That was some charge to do with indecent exposure at an adult theatre. I have no problems with that, that's his choice. His career survived that quite nicely.

He was arrested again in 2002 after when police raided his house discovering a huge stash of pornography (art according to him) depicting naked underage boys & girls. Not cool!

Alas it is true, he plea bargained his way out of it and didn't contest the watered down charge of possessing ellicit material. I think he got a $75 fine.

Tich, I didn't know you still had faith in humanity?!
