Videos; Remember Those?

There is a project being undertaken in my house at the moment. A monumental task of epic proportions that will reverberate in history along with the Gaia creating the Grand Canyon, the Egyptians building the Pyramids, and the porn industry popularising the Internet.

That's right, I'm exaggerating! But it certainly feels that way as we're transferring our vast and varied video collection over to digital. Actually when I'm not at my nine to fiver or doing one of my contracts (the Football people were very happy with their new DVD producer *high five*), I'm not doing very much except watching all our old videos; we have some real gems. Last night I got to watch Big Trouble in Little China;

As if this isn't one of the coolest 80's movies evah; Right up there with it's 1986 counterpart, The Golden Child!

Although they don't really go together as a viewing pair I then followed that with one of the most inspiring films for filmmakers; Baraka. Not seen it? I bet you have. At least parts of it. Still, No? Sheeeeesh! Go! Now! Find! Discover! Oh wait... typically, it's on You-Tube. I don't agree with the way the You-tuber has broken up the film. There's some really distinctive chapters in the film that the digitiser has completely ignored. Those start and end points are really off-putting. Anyway, this is one of my favourite parts in the film. Go and get your relaxing beverage of choice (I'll have a coffee methinks) and sit back and enjoy about ten minutes of Baraka.

Shut up! I know this is a post for the sake of posting... or it has something to do with Earth Day... Yeah, let's pretend it has to do with earth day... don't judge me!

Take: 83

Blogger Shelley Noble mused...

Isn't it magnificent?! The brutality, the majesty... And I'm not talking about Kurt Russell!

Baraka is one of my favorite things. The images continue to haunt me to this day. If ever anything captured what it is to exist on this planet, without artifice, the glory and the horror, this is it.

Nicely done.

Blogger jin mused...

I have not heard of this Baraka you speak of... Before I watch an entire 10 minutes of it I simply MUST ask, "Are there any hawt nekkid guys in it?"

...and posting for postings sake isn't all that bad. It could be much worse... you could have tried to pass off a really old post as a podcast!!! Ha!
;-)

Blogger G3T Films mused...

Hahaha, Shelley, the only majestic thing about Kurt was his mullet!

One of my favourite all time experiences was sitting at an outdoor bush theatre in a soft sprinkling rain watching Baraka. There are no words for what this film is, could you imagine it with V/O... er, destroyed!

Wed Apr 23, 04:18:00 pm

Blogger G3T Films mused...

Oh Jin, there's a couple of young good looking bucks at the start.

"watch an entire 10 minutes of it" Good grief girl! You have inflamed my sense of civic duty. This ten minutes is purely a privilege, a privilege and a tease. YOU MUST NOW GO AND WATCH ALL OF IT THIS INSTANCE!

*red faced over not realising that was an old post on your part* why I oughta...

I enjoyed the video. When I was a kid I used to dream of a capsule, like in the very last part of the video, where I could shut myself up safely from the world, but still experience the womb like pleasures, that well...I imagine one experiences in the womb.

Thu Apr 24, 07:52:00 am

Blogger G3T Films mused...

That's one of the best reactions I've heard so far Bimbimbie. That particular part of the film (from about 3 minutes before the start of the section you've just watched up until the kid looking out at us through the leaves) is all about how if we as humans denigrate our environment it denigrates us and our society. But this is only one very small part of the entire experience of Baraka.

Find it on video, watch the whooole thing. You won't regret it.

Handmaiden, I used to climb under my bed as a kid, it has the same sort of feel to it as that for me.

Yeah, those safe little capsules are amazing. I haven't stayed in one yet but it's definitely on the agenda next time I'm in Tokyo.

Unfortunately for you the hotels like that are only for men at the moment. Although they're apparently making one for women too.

Blogger Ces Adorio mused...

Oh you have a human name? Hi Rich. I saw the movie. Oh. Let's see. Too many people. Unseen idiots who chop down the giant trees and destroy the rain forests. I shall no longer complain about my three bedroom house being too small for painting, drawing or other art activities. A very intense film. I kept thinking of Pink Floyd somehow...Thanks for sharing this.

Thu Apr 24, 11:16:00 am

Blogger G3T Films mused...

Hey Ces,

Yeah, I think that a lot of Pink Floyds stuff, like The Wall, has always been seen as an experience rather than a film or song. I'm sure a lot of people would see Baraka that way too.

The film itself is really an uplifting, beautiful look at life in all its ugliness. I recommend watching it from the start.

I do not recommend complaining about anything. The world is ours to sculpt as we may, especially those who are lucky enough to paint freely in 3 bedroom houses :)

The footage you have here is almost like the book I mentioned a little while ago ... Wild. How white man has messed up what he saw as being empty inhuman wastelands just sitting there waiting for deliverance by the arrogant B's. Sadly it looks like PNG is about to face the same.

As I was hugging that tree I heard the call of an owl ... it's still a beautiful world *!*

How depressing! We went to HK last year and crosses to Kowloon and into mainland China and we couldn't get over the wall-to-wall skyscrapers. I mean, a million people all crammed into HK...all living in the sky. Behind all the glitz and glamour of the waterfront were old tatty skyscrapers where there was only poverty and grime.

Give me clean fresh air and open countryside with trees, lakes, rivers, farmland...anything but that battery existence..all cooped up together like so many chickens in pens.

Come cheer up and visit my ponds :)

You're right Bimbimbie. It is still a beautiful world. But let's not mention that the owl called just as it snapped the neck of some small marsupial ;)

The entire film is much more uplifting than this little section. It's also a lot more depressing too.

PS. The Aussie Govt just spent 13 million dollars in PNG... ON UPGRADING A JAIL! *shakes head* Yep it's screwed, it could have been spent on enforcing mining/logging giants environmental programs.

Arrr Cap'ain!

Walkabout was a great film. David Gumpilil is one of my favourite Aussie actors. I think I've said it before somewhere but I think he'd be an excellent person to Direct sometime. Challenging but fun.

I don't think there's any doubt that native cultures have very different perspectives on the world than westernised consumer driven cultures. Although... not always better on issues of social justice.

A little balance would be nice.

Tue Apr 29, 09:41:00 am

They should indeed show this film to high school students Ces.

I don't think many people have heard of Ron Fricke because experimental documentaries shot on 70mm film (very unusual - it's like High Definition for non digital filmmakers. BeaUTiful!) over a period of 4 years in 20 some different countries.

The principal crew in this film was only a couple of people but if you look at the credits you'll see dozens and dozens of organisations and people involved in the location shooting. It's truly a remarkable effort.

Tue Apr 29, 09:46:00 am

Blogger G3T Films mused...

Wildlife G. Oh that old flight entry into HK was unbelievable wasn't it! Flying in through skyscrapers where you can see people doing their dishes at their kitchen sink from your seat on the plane. Nuts! Luckily it's no longer like that.

I don't find human existence like that all that depressing. It's more fascinating than anything to me. There is of course the issue of when people are trapped into that battery lifestyles. Like kids picking over garbage tips in India, etc. That's depressing. But then I'll read something like Desert Flowers by Waris Dirie and know that with determination anything is possible.

As for Dora, we saw five of them all hanging out together, and another one only about 50m from them. Their exact location was on the northern bank of the creek about 1000m - 1500m from the Dora Creek railway bridge in the direction of Lake Macquarie. Their street addresses were unknown but the chattiest one's name was Barry Smergleflap. Maybe he's in the Spoon Bill phone book?

off topic - do you use a light mounted on your video camera, or do you have studio lights? I have a small video camera and it is worthless in low light, I am trying to find a way around that...

Thanks!!!

Tue Apr 29, 03:51:00 pm

Blogger G3T Films mused...

Hey Phos, don't be discouraged... ALL camcorders are crapactular in low light. I mean, gawd they're shit! I hate them so hard for their intolerance to difficult lighting. Use film and a light meter! Umm... yeah I can't afford to run film either.

So seriously now,

It depends on what you do, do you take your camera places and film things/people up close? Use a mounted light. Just remember, you're trading camera battery for lighting. So unless you have spare batteries or mains power don't expect the camera to last long.

You're mainly filming in one location use a studio kits every time. They're versatile and the lights are powerful enough to give you excellent lighting conditions every time. Problem: Studio kits cost around $3000. Crap! That's a lot of cabbage. Too much for fun at home type filming.

Solution: type "Softbox Fluoro Daylight Kit" into the search engine or ebay type thingo of your choice and you'll find some good cheap lights.

Ha Anonybird, methinks it could be like one of those really blurry bigfoot photos. Maybe, just maybe, there's a blog post in it if it's treated jus'right!

Ah, see, now you're talking about film aesthetics Anonybird; Phos asked about lighting which I can answer. I can even answer how to set up lights for a particular lighting effect. But unfortunately I cannot tell Phos how the should film look to suit his personal aesthetic. If we all wanted film to look the same way it'd be awful stark and boring...

...of course, I can have my opine on whether the aesthetic that another filmmaker tried to achieve was well executed. But we say those things quietly because who really wants their own work to come under heavy scrutiny (if anyone answered 'me' then you're well on your way to becoming a filmmaker!)

Ah, you see, there's a news service on ABC2 that deals wholly with the Asian Region. Along with a report on a Taliban Warlord who had just made an agreement with the Pakistan Govt to suspend military action across the border it had a news report buried in it about the Foreign Minister opening the new jail.

They apparently needed the upgrade to stop breakouts... it was quite cute really, the Warden said something like, 'We only had breakouts when the guards had left for the day or weren't around much'. Different sort of work culture I guess!

One of the inmates they showed was a 26 year old who started his own cult proclaiming to be Jesus, apparently he had over a hundred wives ranging in age from 12 - 40 yrs old. I'm terribly glad the Christian religion had such a positive effect on their heathen tribal ways.

How does one define a Utopian world and Utopian experiences? Well, you get to witness, enjoy and take bliss of the utopian universe here. she has a beautiful face, and perfect size tities accept her offer, New York escorts girls are awaiting for you call.
Manhattan Escorts
New York escorts are full of life, they appreciate gents, and they are comfortable with men who are shy or uncomfortable. If you are looking for escorts in New York for the very first time, don?t be anxious. All you need to try and do is enquire for the best New York escorts agencies or surf on the web. A New York escort will have the ability to put an individual's brain to rest and furthermore entirely relaxx you. Not to point out being in the enterprise of a attractive and intelligent woman will improve your assurance and make your stay in New York memorable, like practically nothing else. So say bye-bye loneliness, hello well-being with New York escorts!

In this competitive world, it is universal that one can get stressed, fretful and finds himself in a situation where he can not enjoy the luxuries of life.

You can even have escort at your socializing event or for night outs.

Another issue that you must stay on top of is price fluctuations from the bookmaker. The prices for placing bets do not just change with different bookies but even with the same. You cannot take it for granted that the prices that are quoted in print like the Racing Post will be valid at the time of the event. With sports betting things can change very rapidly so be sure that the price will be honored before placing your bet otherwise this can seriously affect the outcome of your arbitrage sports betting.

One key thing to remember when you are seeking out the best sports betting odds is that the best odds and the best sports bookmaker are not necessarily one and the same.
online football betting
With this movement the United States has taken a different approach to online gambling. Whereas other countries are working with these services to regulate them, the United States is attempting to prohibit them once and for all. By doing this they are missing out on the ability to tax internet gambling instead of getting rid of it entirely. Conservative estimates have shown that taxing these services could make the government in upwards of $6 billion a year.

So, having established that using a good Selection System is an absolute must if you want to make money from sports betting, how does the average Bettor actually go about making his/her betting selections? My research shows me that, in the main (ignoring the extremes), there are generally two approaches taken:

- The more conservative group looks at the "Short Odds" calls, and plays safe by selecting only those matches where they themselves feel very confident about the outcome.

- The more adventurous group analyses the matches and odds on offer, and then makes selections based on their own gut feeling about how the matches will turn out, making sure that the odds match their concept of a "value" bet.

Everything about horse betting

Several states have enacted legislation allowing slot machines and other forms of gaming on-track. Tracks such as Mountaineer have used this additional source of revenue to improve their facilities, increase their purses and upgrade their overall level of racing. This legislation has also made it attractive for casino owners, such as Harrah's, to purchase and operate horse racing venues as a part of their business strategy.
horse betting
In the United States, races can occur on flat surfaces of either dirt or grass, generally for thoroughbred racing. Other tracks offer quarter horse racing]] and harness racing. The best events in US horse racing have been Kentucky Derby, which, together with the Preakness Stakes and the Belmont Stakes, form the Triple Crown for three-year-olds. However, in recent years the Breeders' Cup races, held at the end of the year, have been challenging the Triple Crown events, held early in.

What makes this event so difficult to win? Several factors have to be considered. First there's the age of the horses. Triple Crown races are limited to 3 year olds, juveniles, all of whom officially have their birthday on January 1st of each year. By the first Saturday in May (the running of the Kentucky Derby), though most of the contestants will have actually reached their third birthday, they won't realize their full growth and potential until their fourth or fifth years.

Brother Derek with Alex Solis up finished in a dead heat for fourth in the Derby, 9 1/2 lengths back after being steadied twice. With a career record of 6 wins out of 9 starts (3 out of 4 this year) Brother Derek had 4 straight wins before the Derby.

Stan Pearson is another forward of note who was at the club at the same time as Rowley. He didn't quite get to 200 goals but did manage a very healthy 148 in 343 appearances between 1937 and 1953. manchesterunited With this as background, United is probably the more popular of the two Manchester football teams, wouldn’t you think? Such may not be the case as there has been a long-standing belief that Manchester City actually has more local fans than their more famous namesakes. A few years ago, a Manchester University research study discovered that Manchester United has 9,000 season ticket holders in the M postal area compared to Manchester City’s 7,000 season ticket holders. City fans quickly pointed out, though, that the research study was conducted before the City team moved to the larger City of Manchester stadium. As a result, no one is really sure which team is more popular among the locals. What is certain is that as far as nationwide and international support is concerned, United has a far larger fan base than City. carrick Back in the Newton Heath era, the kits were made up of yellow and green stitched sections (1878 - 1892), and looked a bit like a jockey's silks. Some additional colour schemes were also employed such as a red and white shirt (1892-1894) paired with blue shorts. This all changed in 1902 when the club changed its name to Manchester United, the club radically altered the kit colours to red shirts, white shorts and black socks. This colour palette has been the foundation of the home strip ever since. The away strip is white jerseys, black shorts and white socks however different looks to this strip have existed. The most notorious of these was the all-grey strip employed in the 1995-1996 campaign. The club did not win a single game when sporting the grey shirts. The team were vociferous in their claims that the drab colour meant they had difficulty seeing their team-mates, hence passes were being sprayed all over the pitch! Another variation was the all-black kit used in 1994 and 2003. There is also a "Third Strip". This shirt which is not often used, is an homage to the kit worn when the club won the 1968 European Cup. The team has occasionally used the strips employed for training sessions in actual matches although this has been a rare occurence.
