Update on the Possum
We've been working with Possum to get him finger-tame and comfortable with being moved between perches. Well, last night we decided he'd made more than enough progress to try him outside the cage. Now, as with his forefathers, he's been in a cage all his life and didn't really like the idea of going anywhere near those big wide open spaces. So after 2 hours of trying to move him to the cage door and having him fly back to a 'safe' perch or even just leaving the cage open and waiting for him to emerge. I finally decided that I'd coerce him into the experience, ie. when he happily jumped onto my finger I just curled my hand around him and before he knew it he was out in the big wide world.
He blinked a couple of times and flew off on a mad dash around the house. Although we were of course a little scared for him, precision flying for a cage bird is not a strong suit at the best of times, he screamed around the corners of the lounge room, projectile pooping as he went, he softly bounced off a few walls, and then with all the grace of an elephant on ice skates 'landed' on the fig tree next to our couch. No worse for wear.
Take: 32
Possum looks well for his first adventures in scaryoutacageland. Bet the real fun will start when he likes being on the outside and wont go to his room *!* He's very prettily marked. We had a blue budgie called Peter when we were kids. Grandparents had a number of budgies and canneries over the years. One budgie loved to sit on top of Grandad's head pulling at the one remaining hair *!*

Yeah, he is prettily marked... for a normal looking green budgie! Although, his feathers are all a bit out of place due to the mad dashing around the house.
I expected him to be a lot more sensitive about being transported around the house and too and from the cage. But he seemed pretty good about it. I guess we'll find out tonight if he'll try and make us work to put him to bed.
Poor Granddad! Although, I could think of worse ways to lose hair.

... Possums cousins are going to be on tv again tomorrow. Did you see the show the first time around? Parrots of Australia, something went wrong with the audio for Qld viewers and other strange things to viewers in other states. So due to disgruntled feathers letting the ABC know not good enough it's going to be on again Sat afternoon 4pm ... Stunninglyglorious *!*
Fri May 16, 04:21:00 pm
Oh yes, we taped it. It's now on DVD labelled Possums Doco. There's a couple of parts that he gets all angry though; the first being when the males are fighting over the females, and the second where the injured budgie is being stalked by the Goanna. He really dislikes those parts.
Fri May 16, 04:28:00 pm
Clever Possum! He's managed to projectile poop already and it's only his first excursion ... well done Possum!!! It does get easier, a tip (just in case he won't let you go to bed tonight) is to gather him in a towel and softly drop him back into Mansion. He'll soon learn to avoid the Great Towel, your finger is a more pleasant way to travel ;)
Fri May 16, 05:18:00 pm
Ha Anonybird
I think he was projectile pooping because it was his first excursion.
It was a very easy night for us. He was super well behaved once he was stationary. I think the idea of flying for more than a 30cm was a little daunting for him though. Flying onto things was a little hard for him. Like all budgies he aimed for the door surroundings but he didn't have the precision to land properly so he would bump his beak and fly off again. He'll get much better though.
I'm hoping he's so used to the finger now he won't try too often to fly off when we're putting him to bed. But if it comes down to it I'll remember the towel - thanks!
Fri May 16, 05:49:00 pm
It's certainly an exciting event! We still have to use the Great Towel on Jack sometimes. No worries, good luck! You could also try putting a goanna in the doorway or put a mouse on YOUR head and see whether Possum then flies Mansion Way ;) Hhehhee
Fri May 16, 06:28:00 pm
He's got his own How To DVD - is he going to critique on the wing then*?*
Fri May 16, 06:33:00 pm
Anonybird, He's been very well behaved, no need to use the towel at all. Although he seemed to think I was a goanna this morning. He was very reluctant to leave his cage. Now he's out he seems to think todays lesson is how to land on the door surrounds. A very handy lesson when trying to keep away from the tall monkey like Goannas in the house.
Sat May 17, 12:42:00 pm
Bimbimbie, of course he has his own How-To DVD, these are hard times for a small green budgie all alone in the world.
He may indeed be a critic... he's certainly good at snubbing the fruit that goes into his cage.
Sat May 17, 12:45:00 pm
Is it a lemon?
Sun May 18, 08:35:00 am
so you have a bird...If you put him in water my Betta would kick his ass.
Sun May 18, 02:30:00 pm
Was your father a lemon?
Sun May 18, 05:58:00 pm
So you have a Betta, if you threw it in the air my foot would kick it's ass... wait, that's all a little violent don't you think? Does your fish get out of its bowl and explore your house of its own accord. No. Actually, neither does our bird. He needs assistance to get out. We ARE happy that he will happiily sit on our shoulders and enjoy our house with us though.
Sun May 18, 06:01:00 pm
Better get him a helmet to protect the few brains nature gave him. To be fair Yukon does the same thing, only no fig tree...
Mon May 19, 06:53:00 am
I think budgies are well known for snubbing fruits. That might be your main problem! Hhehheeee
Mon May 19, 12:26:00 pm
What about greens, does he like lettuce leaves?
Dandelion flowers where another treat
I recall ... not for me, but for Peter the budgie *!*
Mon May 19, 06:55:00 pm
Ha ha!
Does your fish get out of its bowl and explore your house of its own accord.
Well...no he'd have to wear a little helmet full of water & I haven't found one on the internet, yet. But, That gives me an idea.
Tue May 20, 04:55:00 am
Hey Phos, Yukon? Great name for a pet!
As for the brains, well, he's sorted out his flying over the last few days. There's no more head bumping. Mind you, he does appear to have forgotten several things including his banking details.
Tue May 20, 08:37:00 am
Anonybird, the couple of budgies that both Mooncar and I have had have all loved carrot and apple. Possum appears to think they're something sent from the devil. But that's OK, he think the same thing about the cuttlefish in his cage as well.
Tue May 20, 08:39:00 am
Yeah, he totally loves his greens. I know there's several things in the garden that he would apparently love. I just don't know what they are. If it's Dandelion flowers then we have plenty of those growing through our lawn.
He spent about a week ignoring lettuce but in a fit of boredom thought he'd tear it up. Now a little bit of iceberg is his favourite thing. He chews it up and throws it everywhere. What a great game!
Tue May 20, 08:43:00 am
Uh oh, handmaiden, why can I see a bionic fish suit being designed right now?
Tue May 20, 08:44:00 am
CHIRRUP, Chi'ip, Tsup, Chirrup, Tsup, Chi Chu, Chirrup, Tsup, Soooowoowwoo Chirrup they think you're a Seagull now! Cuttlefish PFFFT! Do your Slaves serve Ribena juice to you served on vineleaves as tiny droplets of goodness from all that is like what heaven is supposed to be for the Slaves?
Tue May 20, 10:39:00 am
I do not know of this Ribena juice of which you speak, Jack. Lazy, lazy, slaves! Why haven't they discovered this goodness and supplied me with it post haste. They shall receive an extra-pooping as soon as they arrive home from where ever it is they go when the sun is up. (It's probably off to some cave where the sun won't turn them to dust or something).
Although, I will admit they have supplied the most fantastic rotational four pronged perch for my to sit on during the evenings. It must be a perch, I've never seen it for used for anything else. Maybe your slave can get you one?
Tue May 20, 01:31:00 pm
BWARK! Watch your feathers with that 'perch' CHIRRUP, Chi'ip, Tsup, Chirrup, Tsup, Chi Chu, Chirrup, Tsup, Soooowoowwoo Chirrup!!! There's a button somewhere which can turn it into a budgie CHOPPER! Should you have time when Slaves are in their cave, practise aim of pooping from the Chopper when it's in slow motion and show them what a killer budgie could do. BWARK!
Tue May 20, 02:43:00 pm
Oh Boy! you bird people are weird.
Tue May 20, 03:13:00 pm
Devil wants a Betta breakfast at Handmaiden's
};-}
Wed May 21, 10:47:00 pm
CHIRRUP! What the Hell, Jack? A budgie chopper? Those damnable Monkeys are trying to kill me!
Thankfully, I actually did my first fly-by pooping last night. I was on the way to the fig tree and squeezed one out right onto the Monkeys arm. Serves the damn thing right!
Thu May 22, 09:13:00 am
Handmaiden,
Indubitably!
Thu May 22, 09:14:00 am
Anonybird, You. ARE. Evvvvil!
Thu May 22, 09:15:00 am
CHIRRUP, Chi'ip, Tsup, Chirrup, Tsup, Chi Chu, Chirrup, Tsup, Soooowoowwoo Chirrup thanks for the welcome back! Congratulations with first fly-by pooping, I can see some on Mooncar's shoulder! BWARK! I left the same but in a HUGE quantity on their letterbox for you!
PS: I've read you are progressing well with the 'door trick'!
Wed May 28, 10:12:00 am
YEAH! CHIP CHIRRUP! I got that sucker good. Indeed there is poop there on her shoulder. But that was the first night. I now poop less on shoulders and more in pot plants. Although *blush* I do sometimes have accidents... accidents? BWARK! Ha, they're not accidents, they deserve it!
That door is too narrow to fly out of... why didn't they supply a wider door!?
